Opening

The monthly meeting of the Organ Transplant Recipients of SWFL Inc. was called to order at 11:46 a.m. on November 1, 2018 at The Sanctuary located at 8960 Colonial Center Drive in Ft. Myers by President, Shamie Kelly.

  • Visitors: Speaker- John L. Hogan III, Nursing Director for GCMC Surgical Progressive Care Unit
  • Member Updates: Cheryl Abraham underwent a hip replacement on Tuesday of this week, she is doing well, there is a card going around for her. David Weinstein, Treasurer, is finally out of the hospital and happy to be home. He sends well wishes to everyone and thanks us for our support during his recovery. His wife and caregiver Janet Weinstein is just tired so she is not in attendance today either. The group is discussing if there is anything they can do like bring meals or something to help them. Mike Terry has been struggling with some type of infection that has spread to his head and is in a lot of pain. Shamie will reach out to them as well to discuss if we can be of any help.

Reports

The Secretary’s report was approved and submitted for posting to the website. David Weinstein, Treasurer, is still recovering from back surgery so Treasurers Report is unavailable. Donna Williamson reports that there are no updates for the Fletcher Fund.

Old Business

Comedy for a Cause is all set. There is a Facebook event to RSVP to and remember to share it and tell all of your friends, let’s pack the house! The American Heart Association’s Heart Walk is Saturday, December 8th in Fort Myers at Centennial Park. The festivities begin at 8am and the walk begins a 9am. It is a 5k walk/run at your own pace event. Melissa Tuff has set up a team on the heart walk website under the name “Organ Transplant Recipients of Southwest Florida” and made the first donation to get the team started. Melissa has also been in touch with Savanna at the NKF about the kidney walk and found out that the cost for a table at the kidney walk for a non-profit such as ours will be $500. This will be discussed at the upcoming board meeting when we set a budget for upcoming events. Savanna also stated she could use some help promoting the walk so if any of our members have contacts in media (radio, television, print) please contact them and ask about the potential of them covering the walk. It will take place Sunday March 24th at Lakes Park in Fort Myers. Discussion of a social event will be deferred until Janet and David (event hosts) can be present. Night for Life paperwork will be ready by Monday and they will be available at Comedy for a Cause, and the Holiday meeting they can also be emailed and/or downloaded from the website. Tickets will go on sale beginning at the January meeting so that they are not misplaced before the holidays. We will be doing $35 and $50 tickets per plan and Shamie will confirm to ensure ticket prices will remain the same but as of now that will be our general admission and VIP ticket prices. Please work on getting sponsorships between now and January, and we will work on doing a social event somewhere that our Night for Life band 41 South will be playing as to support them in exchange for supporting us. Details to follow.

New Business

Shamie Kelly’s term as President and David Weinstein’s term as Treasurer are up and there will be a nominations committee for nominations and self-submissions to be given to. Mariann Jefferson will oversee this committee. Nominations will be officially announced at the Holiday Meeting, and voting will take place in January with the new President leading the February meeting. Carlene Brennan and Joyce Rudder will assist Mariann. Gulf Coast Transplant Center was at 34 transplants completed at the time of its temporary closure. Dr. Jeac-Frank Gitue is officially gone, Dr. Biondi is still on maternity leave however it is still expected to reopen in December. Flyer is being passed around for the Holiday Party on December 6th, we have 2 rooms instead of 4 this year which will still be plenty. Group will do a potluck style for sides and desserts and the group funds will provide the meat. We will set up an online event where food items that are being brought can be listed. Bring an ornament for exchange. Room is reserved for 10:30 – 2:00pm so if you can come early to help set up, please do and bring guests! Board meeting will take place between today and the Holiday party to discuss a budget for marketing materials. Amazon Smile is still up and available, don’t forget to use it and recommend it to friends for their holiday shopping. We will also have a “Donate” button on Facebook so that we can have fundraisers using social media. We have a speaker today from Gulf Coast Medical Center, John L. Hogan III, Nursing Director for Surgical Progressive Care. He was a medic in the army where he got most of his credentials. He has been in nursing for over 30 years and has experience in many different areas and he discussed how to be a good advocate/caregiver without overstepping boundaries. He also discussed his experience in the many fields in which he has worked and their relation to transplant.

LifeLink

Service of Remembrance and Appreciation November 4th at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Fort Myers near the Bell Tower Shoppes. The service runs 11am to 3pm and set-up begins at 10:30am. The Holiday luncheon and volunteer appreciation to take place on December 14th at the Edison from 12pm to 2pm.

Melissa Tuff will be speaking on an upcoming AAKP Webinar on Secondary Hyperparathyroidism on Tuesday November 20th, if you’re interested in tuning in please contact Melissa after the meeting. Leftover food is being taken to David and Janet Weinstein to alleviate at least one meal for them while David is recovering.

  • Visitors: Elle Funk visiting from our LifeLink group. Elle received a kidney/pancreas transplant at Tampa General and mostly volunteers in that area.
  • Member Updates: Treasurer David Weinstein had back surgery this week. Recovery has been a rollercoaster as he is in a lot of pain. Visitors are welcome at Lee Memorial on Cleveland Avenue. A card is going around, please send David your well wishes. Secretary Melissa Tuff underwent a Parathyroidectomy last month and is recovering well. Mike Terry is recovering from a bone infection, please keep his recovery in your thoughts.

Reports

Melissa Tuff, Secretary was unable to attend last month’s meeting due to her surgery so there was no Secretary Report available. No Fletcher Fund report. Treasures report shows a previous balance of $10,703.54 with contributions of $5.00 in membership dues, $28.00 deposit from the 50/50 and $55.00 from Pitch for Life resulting in $88.00 in deposits. $150.00 was paid for food (bowling social?) and an additional $51.85 was paid for meeting food leaving an ending balance of $10,562.39

Old Business

We have a date for our next Comedy for a Cause fundraiser and it is Thursday November 8th! Flyers are available, and an event will be created on Facebook so please share it once it is available. Let’s pack the house again! Our group recently had a table at the Walk like MADD 5k. Shamie, and Melissa manned the table with Frank and Mariann next to us with the LifeLink table. It was an interesting setup being behind the gates this year and we felt it was beneficial as we did make some connections. December 8th is the Heart Walk at Centennial Park. Members are encouraged to bring events like this to the groups attention so that we can participate. Not all of our members are just kidney recipients, so we should be supporting ALL organ walks and awareness events. Melissa Tuff will set the group up as a team and more details will be available at next month’s meeting. Walk festivities begin at 8am and the walk starts at 9am. Please see Melissa after the meeting for additional details. Next, we will be looking into purchasing merchandise with our group name on it to hand out at events. This will differentiate us from LifeLink and help to get our name out into the community. New business cards will have a blank line for members to fill their own name in and some additional items we will be reviewing are reusable shopping bags, sunblock, paper fans with our logo on them and possibly pins. The Facebook page will be getting an update and will include a donate button so that members can create fundraisers with our group as the beneficiary. Amazon Smile is still active so don’t forget to utilize this when shopping online. We will be doing a big push for Amazon Smile usage with Cyber Monday and the Holidays coming up. PayPal setup is almost complete, we just need the bank connection and that will be done. We are improving our technology use going forward and getting up to speed with groups like ours. We will have the ability to check out at Night for Life using both Square and PayPal accounts which should greatly reduce the confusion that has taken place in the past. Subcommittees will be contacted and expected to report at the next meeting. We are going to try and be more of a “support” group and less of a “fundraising” group since that is what some previous members have felt that was what we had become. Night for Life and other fundraising meetings will begin to take place separately from our monthly meeting. Paul Lewis suggests we take a census regarding availability for these meetings in advance so that they are scheduled at times when all interested members can attend. Possibly create a Survey Monkey to take a poll. Night for Life plans are moving forward. Melissa spoke with 41 South via Facebook and they have offered to donate their $300 sound engineer fee back to the group so long as we provide them with food at the event. Norma Marlin Martin has offered her place once again to gather for our preparation meetings. Sponsorship paperwork should be available in the coming weeks. Tickets will be available online this year in addition to phone and in person. The new paperwork will also have an area in which sponsors can state whether they will be using their tickets or not so we can lessen the confusion that we had last year.

New Business

The 2019 National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walk is scheduled for March 24th at Lakes Park in Fort Myers. Sponsorship is $500 for non-profits and we are considering having a table for this event. David Weinstein made the motion for the group to pay for an additional social event, his suggestion was Putt-Putt however considering David is recovering from back surgery Mariann Jefferson voted we table the discussion until David returns. Paul Lewis seconded the motion, motion carries. LifeLink’s next meeting is a travel meeting scheduled for Oct. 25th to the Lions Eye Bank. Sunday November 4th is the Service of Remembrance so keep an eye on your email for volunteer opportunities. Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon is December 14th at the Edison again. Melissa Tuff proposed we hold at least one meeting a quarter, either in place of or in addition to our regularly monthly meeting for those who have scheduling conflicts and have been unable to make it to Thursday midday meetings. The meeting could be held in the conference room of a restaurant or at the Center for Spiritual Living in Cape Coral where Melissa is a member and has access to their facilities. We are looking at January as to give people time to make plans to attend. The Ruddy’s also have a club house in their neighborhood that they could use for meetings if need be. It was also discussed that we could hold another Jason’s Deli type fundraiser to inform the community of the additional evening/weekend meeting. A request has been sent to the downtown Fort Myers library to reserve their meeting rooms for our Holiday Party on December 6th. We plan to do a potluck style dinner again with the group providing the meat and members bringing side dishes and desserts. Carleen will be putting together baskets for raffle as she did last year, and Melissa will be raffling off some awareness jewelry. All proceeds will return to the group fund. Also, LifeLink is being reached out to in regard to doing another group meeting. 50/50 was $32 so the group gets $16.

Opening

The monthly meeting of the Organ Transplant Recipients of SWFL Inc. was called to order at 11:45 a.m. on August 2, 2018 at The Sanctuary located at 8960 Colonial Center Drive in Ft. Myers by President, Shamie Kelly.

Member Updates: Carlene Brennan (Shamie’s mom) had a medical procedure done today which is why she is not in attendance and Shamie reports that she is doing well. Phil, a 2x kidney recipient, is dealing with cancer of the throat and tongue. Members are encouraged to reach out via email or phone his wife Aileen for updates. He is in a lot of pain but in good spirits. Joann and Zack are unable to attend todays meeting due to Zack undergoing a heart valve replacement in his efforts to get approved for the waitlist. There is a card going around for them, all members please sign it. Mike Terry’s daughter is having hear surgery today as well, she has been affected by a genetic heart disease that Mike also went through. Rick Keatley has also been having some medical issues related to his kidney function resulting in his absence from the meetings. Paige Fadeley has been hospitalized and undergoing some tests to diagnose what has been affecting her. She was just recently transferred to Tampa from Lee for further treatment. Please send healing thoughts and prayers to all members in need.

Reports

Melissa Tuff (Secretary) was absent last month and Kathy St. Clair took minutes, but they have not been posted to the website. Treasurer David Weinstein and his wife Janet are absent this month as they are attending the Transplant Games in Salt Lake City, but he emailed a copy of the Treasurers Report for last month over and it reads as follows: Previous balance $10,579.62 with contributions of $10.00 in membership dues, $17.50 from the monthly 50/50 drawing, $75.00 from the Pitch for Life event, and $366.00 from the Drag Queen Bingo event at the Moose Lodge resulting in $468.50 in deposits. $67.39 was paid to Shamie Kelly for the meetings food and $276.99 was paid out for the bowling social leaving an ending balance of $10,703.74 The Fletcher Fund Board met on 6/1/18 discussing Night 4 Life and Drag Queen Bingo. The Drag Queen Bingo event brought in just over $700 for the group! Half of the proceeds went into the groups account and the other half was given to the Fletcher Fund. As of 6/1/18 the total assets for the Fletcher Fund were $241,382.93 and 2 grants were paid out as of May 2018.

Old Business

Last month the group arranged a social event which was agreed upon to be bowling in Fort Myers. This event had to be reserved and paid for in advance based on the number of RSVP’s we had. Over 15 members requested a spot be reserved for them and 11 showed up, several of whom were late and did not get to utilize the full amount of prepaid time allotted to the lanes. This was one of the biggest reasons why there has been so much hesitancy for the group to pay for social events as not everyone makes the support group events a priority and when we are required to pre-pay to host a social event and people don’t show, we still have to pay and therefore we lose the money we have all worked so hard to raise. Going forward we will be looking at other, less expensive options for group socials such as Lakes Park as Donna Williamson suggests. Janet & David Weinstein would still like to host a social event in the form of a pool party and barbecue at their home in Cape Coral. Details on this will be discussed at a future meeting when they have returned from Salt Lake City. Due to Riverchase Dermatology’s busy schedule they have not been able to provide us with a speaker and will not be likely to send someone in until next year. At our next meeting we will have a speaker from the Social Security office who will discuss the disability benefits for dialysis and transplant patients. Members of the group have also expressed a need for the by-laws to be posted to the website and the secretary Melissa Tuff will forward the current by-laws to our website manager Bob Lucas to be posted. Since we are beginning to see some funds coming in from our Amazon Smile account this will now be added to the monthly Treasurers Report so members can track how their online shopping benefits the group.

New Business

This year’s Night for Life will take place on April 22nd 2019, the day after Easter. We are starting to plan much earlier this year and we should have some donation forms made up by next month so that we can begin soliciting donations and sponsorships. The play that the Broadway Palm is showing during the event is called “Second Chances” so Shamie will be following up with Broadway Palm staff to see if they would be able to do a scene from it during our event as they have done on occasion in the past. Entertainment has not been pinned down just yet but Donna Williamson made the motion that if 41 South was available again that we recruit them to perform, Paul Lewis seconded the motion, none were opposed therefore the motion carried. Melissa Tuff has been in contact with them via Facebook and they are in fact available for that day. Currently there is a $300 fee for their sound engineer (which they are going to try and negotiate down) and they have requested to be provided with some type of snacks or meal. If this is agreeable to the group, please confirm with them as soon as the decision is made so that no one else books them first. Section A will be reserved solely for VIP tickets this year and we will have Square and/or PayPal set up for the group to receive payments and expedite checkout. Tickets will also be sold online this year as we have gotten feedback that attendees would like to see this as an option. Next month (September) we will begin breaking into groups to begin planning and organization of the event. Paul Lewis would like to organize another comedy club fundraiser since we have had such success with them in the past. He proposed two options; in option 1 we (the group) would pay $600 up front and then we sell as many tickets as possible with 100% of the proceeds coming to us as the entire club would be reserved for out event. Option 2 is how we have done it in the past in which we share the club with other non-profits for the evening and $10 from each $15 ticket sold using the assigned code is given back to our group. Paul will check to find out if we can hold raffles or 50/50 drawing during the event as a way to bring in some extra funds. Donna Williamson made the motion that we move forward in the planning of this event in the same manner we have used in the past, sharing the club with other non-profits as to limit the amount of funds being put up from the groups bank account. Leanne seconded the motion, none opposed so the motion carried. Paul will contact the comedy club owner and find a Thursday in late October or early November to hold the event. Paul anticipates having a date penned down by the next meeting.

  • Visitors: Peter Meehan- 2nd or 3rd visit, currently in stage 4 liver failure seeking out second opinions, advice of other patients, and exploring transplant hospitals. Lois Carnes- new member, attended Jason’s Deli fundraiser at which time she decided to join our group. Received two lung transplants, one in 2003 and one in 2007 and she has just learned that her kidneys have been compromised by the immunosuppressants so she is looking for a referral to a good nephrologist in the area for continued monitoring of her condition.
  • Member Updates/Celebrations: Today is our treasurer David Weinstein’s birthday! Janet and David have brought a cake to share with us to celebrate his special day. He will also be having eye surgery next week and this is the last eye surgery that he will be able to have so please keep him in your thoughts during this time. President Shamie Kelly will now be taking an “active member” role within the Junior League which is a change from her much more involved role in the past. Jenniene Moran’s son will be traveling to Argentina soon and he has made first class flight arrangements for her to travel out to his home where she will care for her grandchildren while he is away.

The Secretary’s report was approved and submitted for posting to the website. Treasurers report shows a previous balance of $3161.95 with contributions of $5.00 in membership dues, $55.00 from the monthly 50/50 drawing, and $7835.32 which is 50% of the Night for Life XI proceeds mutually agreed would be given to the group this year for promotional materials resulting in $7895.32 in deposits. $65.43 was paid to Shamie Kelly for food leaving an ending balance of $ 10991.84

Old Business

  • Night for Life XI-

David Weinstein suggests members of the group start planting the seed now with our regular contributors and sponsors that our next Night for Life event date will be announced soon so that they will have it in the forefront of their minds when asked again soon to participate. Shamie Kelly agrees and hopes to begin planning by the end of this month. As a reminder the 50% agreement of proceeds from the event coming back to the group was for this year only, a new agreement will need to be decided as to what percentage will come back to the group going forward. Shamie plans to talk to the Lee County Medical Society to gain their support for the event. To ensure the events success, more group member participation is required. Shamie Kelly and Melissa Tuff will work on updating the groups use of technology, more specifically the creation and implementation of a Square, PayPal, or both to allow for the purchase of event tickets online as well as the ability to accept donations electronically via the website and Facebook pages.

  • Jason’s Deli-

Our most recent fundraiser held at Jason’s Deli netted our group $4, we will begin planning our next fundraiser at the June meeting. Location to be decided upon at that time.

New Business

  • Fundraising Opportunities-

Although our last fundraiser did not net a significant amount, we were able to make some promising connections. The marketing manager for Texas Roadhouse happened to stop in for dinner and took Melissa Tuff’s business card to discuss potential fundraising opportunities in the future with them at their Fort Myers location. Melissa will follow up as she has not heard from him yet. Melissa will also do some research into other comedy clubs besides the Laugh-In Comedy Café where we have held our previous fundraisers so that we will have more variety of location.

  • June Speaker-

We anticipate having a speaker next month from Riverchase Dermatology

  • Upcoming Events for Possible Group Participation-

We are in the United Way’s directory. Paul Lewis will work with his contacts to see about setting up a information table at FGCU to educate students on the importance of organ donation. September 29th is the Walk like MADD Dash at Jet Blue Park, Shamie will find out about how we can get registered to have an information table at the event as we have participated in the past. Shamie would also like to organize a “Give Life Day” at Bell Tower to be completely hosted by our group. Shamie is also meeting with Chris at Quick Copy to create our promotional materials and she hopes to have some proofs for the group to review at the June meeting. Melissa Tuff suggests a possible weekday or weekend 5k fun run/walk in downtown Fort Myers to raise awareness for organ donation and the support group. Paul Lewis will also try to gather information on who we need to contact to organize such an event.

  • Membership-

Members are encouraged to bring family and friends to become members of the support group. Also be sure to take group flyers to leave in the medical offices of any physicians that may be treating them so that other patients may see them and become interested in joining the group. The discussion has come about again to hold a quarterly evening or weekend meeting for those who would like to be members but cannot attend due to work or other scheduling conflicts. Next month we will discuss this further and try to plan for our first meeting of this type to be held in August.

  • Night for Life XII-

This year’s forms will have a space to indicate whether sponsors plan on using their seats and if so, how many will be in attendance. A follow-up will be done to verify this number at least one week prior to the event as to prevent any confusion or empty tables.

Reports

The March Secretary’s report was approved and submitted for posting to the website. Treasures report shows a previous balance of $2761.52 with contributions of $10.00 in membership dues, and $485.00 in other donations resulting in $495.00 in deposits. $94.37 was paid to Carlene Brennan for food leaving an ending balance of $3162.15 for the month of April.

Old Business

Night for Life XI Wrap Up:

  • Planning time- We will have the date for next years event in May and we can begin planning much earlier. Floor opened to discussions on what works and what does not work well for this event.
  • Music- Entertainment should not be the focus, perhaps the group should hold a social event to review possible acts.
  • Emcee- Ensure they have everything they need to be more prepared.
  • Speakers- Long but good. Make sure speakers stick to 2-3 minute speeches next year.
  • Tickets- Lots of empty seats and tables, push sales next year!
  • Auctions & checkout- Overall better than last year but we need everyone to work together next year on ticket sales and donation solicitation, we cannot keep depending on the same people. Paul Lewis suggests we implement a link to purchase tickets on the website without using PayPal.
  • Committees- Each committee and subcommittee should be comprised of at least 2 people to serve as backups.
  • Paperwork- Revamp the sponsorship form to include a line where the sponsor can indicate if they will be attending and if so, how many seats are needed. If the leave the field blank their seats may be sold to other guests. In addition, follow-up with sponsors a couple of days to a week in advance to confirm attendance.
  • Goodie Table- This was a success! This could be a permanent replacement to the time-consuming process of preparing guest bags in advance.
  • 50/50 & Raffle- Have someone canvas the dining area next year to sell tickets, this was a missed opportunity this year.
  • Invitations- Make sure to extend invites to more prominent people.
  • Pictures- Next year try to find a professional photographer or place disposable cameras on tables for guests to take pictures at the event. Another missed opportunity since our only pictures this year came from Electric Lipstick’s Facebook page.

Opening

The monthly meeting of the Organ Transplant Recipients of SWFL Inc. was called to order at 11:51 a.m. on March 1, 2018 at The Sanctuary located at 8960 Colonial Center Drive in Ft. Myers by Shamie Kelly, President of the group.

  • Lunch update: This month’s lunch is pizza but next month we will have a catered lunch delivered since we will be having a guest speaker.
  • Member Updates: Jenniene Moran have been having some medical issues but would like to report that her kidney is doing fine! Mike Terry reports that they have found the issue with his ear and it is being treated so he is feeling better. George Frye is also feeling better and celebrating his 80th birthday on Saturday. Norma Marlin Martin hurt her back but is keeping busy planning her high school reunion which is also why she has not been active with planning the Night for Life event as she has in the past. Kim’s fiancé Nick who is waiting for a heart has been moved to the top of the list and they are hoping that means his heart will be coming soon.

The February Secretary’s report was approved and submitted to Bob for posting to the website. Donna Williamson reports the Fletcher Fund balances as of this meeting were $228,136.93 in total funds and $11,197 in grants were given in the past year. Just a reminder that The Fletcher Fund Application is available on the OTRSWFL webpage. Treasures report shows a previous balance of $1467.32 with contributions of $45.00 in membership dues, $30.00 from the monthly 50/50 drawing, a donation of $20.00 from DitUSA, a deposit of $30.00 under “other,” $910.00 from our Laugh-In Comedy Café Fundraiser, $174.59 and from our Jason’s Deli Fundraiser resulting in $1,409.59 in deposits. $115.39 was paid to Carlene Brennan for food leaving an ending balance of $2761.52 for the month of March. Membership report: as many of you may have noticed our membership is dwindling. Members are encouraged to leave our literature in their relevant physicians and clinics offices as to inform others of our existence. Paul Lewis suggests we organize an awareness walk downtown which Melissa agrees could be a good social event as well. It was also suggested that we inquire about our information being provided to other transplant hospitals such as Cleveland Clinic in Weston and Tampa General as not all members may get transplanted locally. The United Way hosts a non-profit event that we can see if we can take part in as well as FGCU and Southwestern Florida College could also be good outlets at which to get our name out. Any member with other ideas to attract new members please feel free to share it with Shamie, Mariann, or Melissa. Lastly, Shamie Kelly would like to report that going forward Quick Copy will be used to print our business and rack cards and possibly a new roll down display to be used at events. That way we are not only utilizing their services for Night for Life printing.

 

 

Old Business-

  • Prayer- Melissa Tuff made the motion that whomever chooses to do the prayer at the beginning of our monthly meeting do it however they feel comfortable and then a moment of silence will be observed at its conclusion to allow for others to observe their personal beliefs. Donna Williamson seconded the motion thus the motion passed.
  • Fundraising- Due to the success of our last Jason’s Deli fundraiser we have been invited back and our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24th from 4-8 pm. This time we will be able to set up a table which provides us with an opportunity to inform people about our group.

New Business

  • Kidney Walk- Melissa and Shamie are working with Savanna Lantza of the National Kidney Foundation to get a photo booth donated and some type of media coverage be it television or radio. Dr. Biondi and Dr. Mogilishetti of the Lee Health Transplant Institute are scheduled to speak at the event.
  • Night for Life XI- Quick Copy has been confirmed to sponsor our printing for the event. The band Electric Lipstick has been confirmed and for anyone who would like to see them perform beforehand they will be playing at Rusty’s Raw Bar & Grill in Cape Coral this weekend. For any auction item donations or questions please see Cheryl Abraham if it concerns Chinese Auction items and Melissa Tuff for silent. As discussed, our theme for this year is “Donor Families” so Shamie will open up the evenings speeches and we need two more speakers. Possible suggestions were Sherry who is Donna Williamson’s neighbor, Kathy St. Clair’s donor who participated in a paired exchange, the family of the young boy who was in the news recently that became a donor, and perhaps the family of Greg Allman. Carlene Brennan had an article placed to promote the event in the Florida Weekly and Shamie is waiting to head back from her media contacts in regard to their coverage of Night for Life. Caroline and Tim offered to help with Chinese Auction ticket sales to give Cheryl a break to eat and enjoy the show. Joyce Rudder has offered to help with silent. The 50/50 will be ran by Paul, Tim, and Manny (Eric) if he can make it with Frank and Carlene to aid with greeting arriving guests. David and Janet Weinstein, along with Donna Williamson will be handling check-in and registration as well as check out at the auctions conclusion. David and Melissa will attend the meeting with Broadway Palm on the 16th to discuss the new layout. As of now we have only sold 12 tickets so be sure to share the event on Facebook, take plenty of flyers to distribute and make sure to tell all of your friends! We have confirmed sponsorships from Lee Health at the $5000 level, DaVita at $500, Dr. Malohoni(?) at $500, Riverchase Dermatology at $500, and Center Pharmacy at $500. Section A seats are not being sold as they are being held as backup for VIPs.
  • General Announcements- Paul Lewis would like the group to know from 10-2 on Saturday there will be a health fair at the Villas Community Center. Melissa Tuff would like to announce her attendance to the National Kidney Patient Summit once again this year. She will be attending next month to push for our legislator’s support on H.R. 3867; an amendment to title XVIII of the Social Security Act to create care management demonstration programs for chronic kidney disease under the Medicare program, and for other purposes and H.R. 1270 the Living Donor Protection Act. Please support her hard work by contacting your congressman and demanding their support on these two important bills. Also, Melissa is raising money for her own transplant while spreading awareness to the need for organ donation through her online Bonfire t-shirt sales. If you are interested in purchasing one of her “Organ Donation – Let’s Taco ‘Bout It” t-shirts, please see her, or her Facebook for more details on how you can order. Lastly, Rick Keatley’s annual Organ Recipient Picnic at Scherer State Park in Osprey, FL is on Saturday March 24th for all who would like to attend. There is an event on Facebook and you are encouraged to contact Rick to let him know how many to expect for food purposes.

Reports

The Secretary’s report was approved and submitted to Bob for posting to the website. Donna Williamson reports the Fletcher Fund balances as of 10/27/17 was $21,100.36 in the “Foundation Fund” and $205,673.85 in the “Community Fund” for a total of $226,774.21. At their last meeting it was decided that $10,000 would be transferred into the equity account and that annual member grant amounts would increase to $1500. The fund will also reimburse the group for half of its website fees from this year, and all years going forward as the Fletcher Fund Application is available on the OTRSWFL webpage. Shamie Kelly requests a formal report be compiled which will include the amount of grants paid out of the Fletcher Fund to members. Donna Williamson acknowledged and agreed to provide this report. Treasures report shows a previous balance of $1433.91 with contributions of $75.00 in membership dues and $26.00 from the monthly 50/50 resulting in $101.00 in deposits. $62.59 was paid to Shamie Kelly for food leaving an ending balance of $1472.32 David Weinstein (treasurer) would like to remind everyone that membership fees are due this month and he will be available after the meeting for anyone wanting to pay.

Old Business

On January 24th the group hosted a fundraiser at the Jason’s Deli located on Cypress Lake. 15% of each receipt placed in the designated box was given back to our group for a total of $174.59!! The event organizer, GroupRaise, wants to highlight our organization and our fundraising/awareness efforts and the group agreed to allow them to do so. Shamie proposed we host another fundraiser in April at the same location except this time we will be given a table and allowed to distribute educational materials during the event. This time we would preferably hold the event on a Sunday, likely the 22nd or 29th. On February 8th the group will once again host “Comedy for a Cause” at the Laugh-In Comedy Club in Fort Myers. This event is open to the public and tickets are $15 per seat. $10 of each ticket sold will be donated back to the group. Flyers are available, and the event is also on Facebook. The National Kidney Foundation’s annual kidney walk will be taking place this year on Sunday March 11th at the beautiful Lakes Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk will start at 10 a.m. There is a prescription discount program called “Good Rx” that offers discounts on an array of mediations, including transplant meds. More information regarding this program will be provided on the groups website. Shirts and hats are available for sale, please see Shamie for more information. Business cards and name tags are being ordered from Quik Copy as to not only utilize them for Night for Life programs. David Weinstein made a motion for the group to adopt a non-denominational prayer, Kathy St. Clair seconded, Donna and Steve Williamson opposed, majority in favor and the motion carried.

New Business

This years for Life event will take place on April 2nd at the Broadway Palm. Flyers and donation requests are available, please see Shamie for these handouts. Janet Weinstein has recruited another band to replace last year’s entertainment as they were not available for this year’s event. Our focus will be on donor families and the plan is to have a couple donor families speak about their experience with organ donation. Shamie mentioned last month about constructing a slideshow to be displayed at some point during the event that details the group and the Fletcher Fund along with their functions and missions. There will be no VIP tickets available for purchase as they are being reserved at this time for the sponsorship tables. The cutoff for accepting physical donations for the auctions is March 26th and we will plan to hold a committee meeting at Norma Martin’s house on or around the 27th. The first committee planning meeting is scheduled for 2/23/18 at 3:30 p.m. in the Gulf Coast Hospital cafeteria. There is a sign-up sheet being passed around for members to indicate where they would like to help out in relation to the event. Shamie Kelly has already approached Associates of Nephrology, Lee Health, and Surgical Specialists of SWFL for sponsorship, please remember to ask your transplant doctors about potential sponsorships. Any organizations or individuals solicited should be disclosed to a member of the committee so that they are not being contacted more than once. Donna Williamson made a motion that 50% of this year’s proceeds (after expenses) are retained by the Fletcher Fund and 50% go back to the OTRSWFL for promotion of the group and organ donation awareness. Funds are to be used for PR and educational materials only, not for lunches and social events. Paul Lewis seconded the motion, all in favor, no opposed. David Weinstein then made the motion to repeal the motion he made last month (the members of the OTRSWFL members should be responsible for deciding how much of the proceeds go to the Fletcher Fund and how much stay with the group from the Night for Life event. The specific amount can be determined at a later date. Kathy St.Clair seconded the motion.) and replace it with the following: the OTRSWFL will entirely run the Night for Life event beginning this year. All funds received will be processed through OTRSWFL at which time the groups board will determine the amount of funds to be distributed to the Fletcher Fund based on the following: 1. The amount of money in the Fletcher Fund’s bank accounts.

  1. The amount of interest received by the Fletcher Fund from the SWFL Community Fund
  2. The amount of money the Fletcher Fund is allowed to distribute to our members each year.
  3. The amount the Fletcher Fund gave out as grants and other expenses.

This money will be used for promotional materials, member socials, organ donation awareness, and community outreach. The motion failed to pass as all members in attendance were opposed. Donna Williamson motioned to amend her original motion to include the 50% of Night for Life proceeds that will be retained by the OTRSWFL Support Group this year can be used as needed. Leah seconded the motion, all in favor, none opposed.

Jenniene Moran received her 3rd kidney in Baltimore, MD through a paired exchange. She was the 6th recipient in the chain and although she has been battling some infections, she is doing relatively well and the kidney is working.

The Treasurers report shows a previous balance of $1216.16 with contributions of $20.00 from the monthly 50/50, $20.00 from name tags, $11.00 from hat sales, and $84.00 from Pitch for Life resulting in $135.00 in deposits. $136.16 was paid to Shamie Kelly for last month’s meetings food leaving an ending balance of $1215.00 Donna Williamson has reports from the Fletcher Fund that will be discussed more in Old Business.

Old Business

There has been much discussion and some confusion surrounding the Fletcher Fund, its purpose, and what exactly its funds can be utilized for. Donna Williamson, Fletcher Fund board member, is here to discuss this following a recent meeting of the board which addressed some of these questions. First off, it is important to differentiate the purpose between the two groups; being the Fletcher Fund and the Organ Transplant Recipients of SWFL. The purpose of the OTRSWFL is to provide a place for the sharing of medical experiences among members, to provide public information and education on matters relating to organ transplantation and organ donation, and to provide “support” activities for transplant candidates, recipients, donors and families while the purpose of the Fletcher Fund is to provide financial support for members in need of assistance with medical expenses related to transplant.

Donna also provided the financial report for the Fletcher Fund showing a total net income from December 2016-May 2017 of $24,879.38 and a total balance of over $217,000. Also during the last Fletcher Fund board meeting a decision was made to raise the grant amount to $1500 annually per member. Next month there will be more discussion on the Fletcher Fund if need be as well as a final wrap-up for Night for Life 10 so that planning for Night for Life 11 can begin. The membership application is now available on the website for those wanting to refer new members.

New Business

Hats are now also available to represent the group. They are $11.00 and anyone interested can speak with Shamie Kelly regarding purchasing. LifeLink is making this month’s volunteer meeting a travel meeting to the tissue bank in Tampa. It is on 7/25 and begins at noon, information can be found on the volunteer portal of the LifeLink site if you are registered with them.

The MADD Dash 5k at Jet Blue Park will take place on 9/30 this year and this could be a wonderful opportunity to represent the group versus just LifeLink if members are interested in manning a table to provide information. Last year several members volunteered for LifeLink at the event and had a good response from some donor families who came up to share their stories.

We also have several opportunities for group fundraising and grants that are available through local businesses one of which we are already in the midst of planning. Jason’s Deli will give 15% of purchases made on the day of our choosing which Shamie is working on scheduling a date in September. Wal-Mart provides grants of anywhere from $200-2500 for local non-profit organizations and Shamie has already begun the application process on behalf of the group.

Donna Williamson brought to the floor that Chico’s also provides grants for educational purposes so this may be an option to help pay for group brochures as these are considered educational materials. In an effort to increase the social aspect of our group outside of monthly meetings, Janet and David Weinstein have so graciously offered to host a pool party/BBQ at their home on 7/30. Food will be provided just bring your swimsuits and a smile! Directions will be made available to those who RSVP via the email that will go out to group members.

Some ideas were discussed regarding the next Night for Life which included a 3-day limit on accepting auction items prior to the event and expediting checkout by using another machine and signage for a cash & check only line. Also, a date has been selected for Night for Life 11 which is April 2nd 2018. In addition, dates will be discussed next month for another comedy club fundraiser to benefit the group.

Opening

The monthly meeting of the Organ Transplant Recipients of SWFL Inc. was called to order at 11:35 a.m. on August 4, 2016 at The Sanctuary located at 8960 Colonial Center Drive in Ft. Myers by Shamie Kelly, President of the group.

Reports

The Secretary’s report was approved and meeting minutes are available to view on the website. The Treasurers report shows a previous balance of $936.05 with contributions of $44.00 from the monthly 50/50 and membership dues collected totaling $25.00 resulting in $69.00 in deposits. $59.95 was paid to Steve Williamson for last month’s meetings food and $43.00 was paid to Shamie Kelly for the organizations P.O. Box rental leaving an ending balance of $902.10 Donna Williamson reports that there were no contributions nor any payouts from the Fletcher Fund last month.

Old Business

Shamie Kelly, President of the group, wanted the group to know that we have had to refund the day of basketball with Shaquille O’Neal to the winning bidders from the Night for Life event. There have been complications with trying to schedule a day for it to take place so the group refunded the money to the buyer. We will still have the certificate so it may be used for a future fundraiser. Carlene Brennen proposed we hold a fundraiser at our Christmas party. She has been collecting some really neat holiday items and would like to hold a Chinese auction at the party which will be at no cost to the group because she is offering to provide all of the items to be put up for auction.

The items vary from gifts that can be given to others and items members may want for themselves. Donna Williamson made the motion to allow Carlene to proceed with her project with much gratitude from the group for her generosity. Jenniene Moran as well as David Weinstein seconded it and the group unanimously approved the motion. Carlene will provide a detailed proposal of the event and where she would like the funds designated to the Fletcher Fund or the group at next month’s meeting. This year Night for Life is celebrating a decade so Donna Williamson hopes the group all shares in her enthusiasm to make this year’s event even bigger and better than ever.

She would like to see the event focus on donors this year and have living donors and donor families as speakers so she is encouraging everyone in the group who has had a living donor transplant or those who are in touch with their deceased donor families to invite them to come to the event even if they do not wish to speak. Donna states that many of the people who attend typically know a recipient but many are still scared of donation so with focusing on donors they will be able to see for themselves that living donors still have normal lives after donating and they can meet families who chose to donate their loved ones organs which can put their minds at ease as well.

She feels that donors should not be paying for their ticket to the event and hopes that the recipient would cover that for them but if finances are an issue then contact Donna or someone else with the Fletcher Fund to discuss getting a grant to ensure the donors get in at no charge. All of the donors have been thanked for Night for Life and a big thanks to everyone who helped out with the event, the group as a whole feels that it was a great success. There will be a wrap-up meeting held immediately following today’s meeting. Give Life Day was on July 16th at the Edison Mall. While Be the Match bone marrow registry did not show up, Lee Memorial was there with the blood mobile, representatives from our support group were there as well as volunteers from LifeLink to register organ donors. 3 people registered at the table, 6 people donated blood, and we spoke to approximately 70 people regarding organ and tissue donation. Edison Mall was thrilled with our participation and Shamie is already discussing with their PR representative another event to be held in April during Donate Life month which will be hosted by us rather than LifeLink. They are looking to make this more of a “health fair” type of event and it will be held near Macy’s with a stage for recipients and donors to speak. Ideally she would like to find some sponsors along with One Blood and maybe a doctor’s office to send a couple of people out to represent them.

We will discuss the event further at the November meeting when it will be about time to begin planning for it. There are new business cards and flyers for the group, please make sure to take some before you leave the meeting today to distribute them. Staples made a mistake on the order by so printing them off center so they were free. Shamie also got a new banner a poster which the poster was also printed wrong so it was free as well. We need more pamphlets for the group and Shamie asked for a member of the group to volunteer to help with the design. Shamie talked to Bob Lucas about adding Café Press to our group’s website and he said that it would not be a problem to add the link on our page which will act as another source of revenue for the group. There are all kinds of items that can be ordered through Café Press so this could be a really great way to not only advertise the group but to also raise more money for our monthly expenses. An email with the color selections for the regular group shirts will be sent out and shirts must be paid for before they can be ordered. Shamie is also looking into some other companies to order shirts from in the future to try and find a more competitive rate. The expected cost is about $10-11 per shirt and they will be short sleeved. Be prepared to pay for your shirt at the September meeting, cash only please.

New Business

Shamie Kelly, President of the group, spoke with a member of the Gulf Coast Transplant Center who informed her that they now have their second transplant surgeon and they expect the second nephrologist to be there by mid-September and there is an interim director from a consulting firm in place. The new social worker will start in early September about the same time as the nephrologist. With UNOS overseeing the process and everything looking like it is finally on track they expect to re-open the deceased transplant program in early October. Next month the group plans to hold its first night meeting. The transplant center is trying to help and they are possibly going to let us hold the meeting in the community room at Gulf Coast. The person that needs to approve this will be out of the office until Monday the 8th so the transplant center will get back to Shamie to confirm sometime next week. It will still be held on the first Thursday of the month with the anticipated time to be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The transplant center is very interested in working with us and would really like to send a team to represent them at our next meeting so that they can give us any updates on the program and give members a chance to ask questions. As soon as Shamie hears who will be coming from the transplant team she will send out an email to the group with the update. Although they will continue to only do kidney transplants at Gulf Coast it is still good to have a transplant team directly working with the group. A second place to hold the meeting was proposed by Carlene Brennen which was to hold the meeting in the cafeteria if the community room is not available for our next meeting. Donna Williamson seconded the motion so it was decided that if the meeting could not be held at the community room everyone would meet in the cafeteria. Everyone please remember to silence your cell phones before entering the room for the meeting. It is understood that they need to be on, especially for those waiting for a transplant, but just be mindful to keep them on vibrate or silent mode when in the meetings. All members please make sure to register on the website. That is how you can ensure that you receive all of the updates and announcements that are sent out via email. Paul Lewis also mentioned Comedy for a Cause again as a way for the group to host a fundraiser. There is a Financial Workshop for Transplant Patients hosted by the LifeLink Legacy Fund being held at Tampa General on Friday, August 12th. Flyers have been handed out to members detailing the event and RSVP’s are required by tomorrow August 5th. This is for pre and post transplant patients and lunch will be provided. They are going to try to stream it live and have it on their Facebook page but it is unknown if that will definitely happen. Paul Lewis gathered information on the Comedy for a Cause fundraising option that has been brought up at several past meetings. There is an initial investment of $600 which basically rents the place for the evening and we are responsible for selling tickets at cost of $15 each. 100% of the ticket costs come back to the group which means at least 40 tickets need to be sold in order to break even. Paul is unsure of the capacity at this time but will find out for the next meeting. Shamie thinks this could be a possibility and we could look into getting a sponsor such as Lee Memorial to cover the $600 since they did not make their usual donation to the Night for Life event and they could also use the event to gather good publicity for the reopening of their transplant center. With Lee Memorial sponsoring the event we also could expand our ticket sales to their employees which would bring a larger crowd than just our group alone. The concern over the type of talent they will have available was brought up and Shamie said that would be something to be looked into and discussed at next month’s meeting.

Opening

The monthly meeting of the Organ Transplant Recipients of SWFL Inc. was called to order at 11:45 a.m. on July 7, 2016 at The Sanctuary located at 8960 Colonial Center Drive in Ft. Myers by Shamie Kelly, President of the group.

Announcements
•    Anniversaries: Frank Tutay-1st Kidney (7/79), Paul Lewis-Pancreas (7/1/12), Kathleen O’Toole-Lung (7/16/09), James E. Johnson-Kidney (7/17/10), Mariann Jefferson-Liver & Bone Marrow (7/20/97), Madelyn Chrone-Heart (7/30/00)

•    Visitors: Steve Cavaleri, who is in the process of working with the V.A. to get listed through Tampa General for a liver. George Fry a heart transplant recipient post massive heart attack. His transplant took place at Tampa General on 6/2/05 and he recently had his first annual transplant follow up in which his biopsy showed absolutely no signs of rejection. Rhonda who is originally from Chicago is with us for the first time today as well. She moved here to get on the list for a kidney and she has been listed at Tampa General for the last 2 years. Two weeks ago she got a phone call for a match but it was a no-go. She is hopeful that she will get another call very soon. Jean & Alissa Watlington are here for their first time, Alissa found out about the group after Googling support groups for transplant patients in the area on behalf of her mother Jean who is a liver recipient. Jean received her liver at Tampa General on May 13th 2015 so she just celebrated her 1 year transplantiversary!

•    Member Updates: Secretary of the group Melissa Tuff shared the good news that she was just approved for the waitlist at Tampa General for her second kidney. Member Donna Williamson reported that John Hall has suffered some setbacks in his recovery unrelated to his transplant. John had a hip replacement and has been having problems with it so he is being treated up north near their summer home. Shamie Kelly reminded the members of the group that if they have updates on members that are not able to attend to share this with the group so that we can send them a card wishing them a speedy recovery. At this time existing members went around the room to do a brief introduction since there are so many visitors and potential new members in attendance.

Reports

The Secretary’s report was approved and meeting minutes are available to view on the website. The Treasurers report shows a previous balance of $566.75 with contributions of $53.00 from the monthly 50/50, membership dues collected totaling $10.00, $72.00 from the Pitch for Life Baseball Fundraiser, and $300.00 from the Fletcher Fund to cover 50% of the website costs resulting in $435.00 in deposits. $65.70 was paid to Shamie Kelly for last month’s meetings food leaving an ending balance of $936.05 Donna Williamson does not have the latest financial report for the Fletcher Fund but announced that they paid out a grant for $1000.00 to a member in need last month.

New Business

Shamie Kelly, President of the group, met with members of the Gulf Coast Transplant Center to discuss the restructuring of the transplant program. Barbara Miller has resigned/retired from the position of Renal Transplant System Director for Lee Memorial Health System and the social worker Janet Milan who visited the group a few months ago has been replaced due to UNOS requiring a licensed social worker in that position. She has been relocated within the Lee Memorial Health System and it is unknown if she will return to the transplant team. Janet also held a position on the Fletcher Fund board so at this time it is not known if she will continue to serve on the board. In addition, the transplant nephrologist who was scheduled to join the team has experienced some family issues that are prevented him from taking the position so now another nephrologist is coming on board. Shamie would like to remind members not to bombard the transplant center with emails or visits during this time of restructuring. They have assured her they will give us more information by attending or holding a meeting for the group closer to the center reopening, possibly around Christmas.

Shamie also met with Dr. Delans from Associates in Nephrology who were previously affiliated with Gulf Coast Transplant Center as they are negotiating with Tampa General to provide follow-up care to their transplant patients. This will also go for Surgical Specialists who were previously involved with the Gulf Coast Transplant Center. Further clarification should be available next month as Shamie will be meeting with them again today. Give Life Day is Saturday July 16th at Edison Mall from 2-5pm. LifeLink will have a table set up to register organ donors, Be The Match Bone Marrow Registry will be there recruiting bone marrow donors, and One Blood or Lee Memorial will be there to accept blood donations and possibly do blood pressure checks.

Shamie proposed the idea and LifeLink sort of ran with it but she would like our group to have a table there since most of the people volunteering for LifeLink are group members as well but it is also a great opportunity to get the word out about the support group. A sign-up sheet will be passed around for those interested in volunteering for the event. Apple has released a new version of their operating system that allows people to register as an organ donor at the push of a button. Make sure to share this will all those you know who use iPhones.

Old Business

Jenniene Moran was not able to attend today so a Night for Life wrap up meeting is scheduled for immediately following our monthly August meeting. Even if you weren’t involved this year feel free to attend so that we can start brainstorming for our Night for Life X! If you were personally involved in gathering donations please be sure to thank the person or organization that contributed by email, phone, a short note, or even a visit. Doing so will help to ensure we can count on their support for future events.

The formal Thank You that was supposed to have been printed in the News Press was never printed although it was submitted four different times so we will continue to thank our donors via the website and Facebook. Name tags are being ordered and will hopefully be in before the Give Life Day event, they are expected to be $8.00 each. Shamie is continuing to work with the management of Sonny’s BBQ to coordinate our Random Acts of BBQ date. She expects this to be late August or early September and the group prefers to do a weekend versus a weekday but we will also work with whatever they are willing to give us.

Quarterly night meetings have been proposed and September is the tentative start date for this to occur pending further discussion at our next meeting. Donna Williamson made the motion to add Café Press to the OrganSupport.com website as a way to raise more money for the group. Café Press offers shirts, coffee mugs, and various other customizable items for sale with a portion of the proceeds coming back to the group it benefits. Mariann Jefferson seconded the motion and a group vote was also taken in which no one opposed the motion. Paul Lewis also mentioned Comedy for a Cause again as a way for the group to host a fundraiser. He will gather information and it can be discussed more in depth at the next meeting.
